Carolyn Gaffney
“The desire to be more is God given so be more and give to God the glory.”
Carolyn Travagline was born on September 3, 1951 in St Joseph hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Both sets of grandparents were born in Italy. They came to America for a better life. Her father’s side of the family were steel mill workers. But it’s the culture of her mother’s side that really influenced her.
When Carolyn was young she had a hard childhood when it came to some things. She would stutter all of the time and speaking was very hard for her. She also would have times where she would get very severe migraines. Later in her childhood she found out that she had extreme sinus issues. She needed many operations to correct the problem.
“Don’t judge me until you walk a mile in my shoes,” is a motto that really describes her childhood.
School years for Carolyn were tough. When she started school her stuttering continued and she says, “It was tough because I basically lived in my older sister's shadow.” She also says, “It was hard because when I had the same teachers as my sister and they would always compare me to her.” But during her school years she found that she had a love for cooking and when her mother died her love for cooking became more than a passion.
Carolyn was thirteen she lost her mother. This period of time was very hard for her. Since her and her mother were very close she grieved for a while. She says “Cooking was a passion my mother and I both shared and every time I cook it makes me feel closer to her.” Although this was a period of hardship and a very depressing time in her life she met a man. His name was Michael Gaffney and she says they instantly fell in love. After a short romance, they got married.
They had their oldest son and only son, Kevin Gaffney, about ten months after their marriage. She’d gotten pregnant on the honeymoon. Their second child was Kristina Gaffney and their next and youngest daughter was Marybeth Gaffney. During this stage in her life cooking, her passion, became very important to her since she was doing it for her family. About ten years later her husband Michael was required by the government to go to Germany to do some accounting for a base in Germany. They lived there for three years. When they came back they bought a new home in Pennsylvania where she lives to this day.
Now Carolyn Gaffney is currently sixty two years old and spends a lot of time cooking and perfecting new recipes and old and then testing them on her grandchildren and children. Her grandchildren are (listed in oldest to youngest) Devin Gaffney, Joshua Gaffney and Zachery Gaffney. These are the sons of Kevin Gaffney and the sons of Marybeth Davidson are, Osgood Davidson and Rockwell Davidson.
